10 Questions with Amrit Gata-Aura

In this new monthly blog series, we talk to our staff at Eternal Engagements from all departments and deeply dive into their career highlights, personal inspirations and thoughts about the business, plus a few fun facts!

Meet our HR Manager Amrit Gata-Aura

First Job?

Sainsbury’s checkout, I was 14. I’d sometimes get to work on the CD and DVD counter, which was preferable to the chillers.

How would you introduce yourself in an elevator pitch?

I am the HR Manager for Eternal Engagements. I was the first employee and helped build the team you see today. I am a CIPD-qualified HR professional with over six years of experience in the field and over ten years of experience managing people and teams across varied industries – food retail, third sector and most recently, as HR Business Partner in Europe’s most prominent single pay worker’s cooperative.

Biggest Career achievement?

I worked in HR throughout the pandemic in a vital food distribution business and implemented projects on HR strategy, diversity and inclusion and performance management. All whilst also completing my CIPD qualifications – phew!

Nickname?

Not that I know!

What is it about the job that you enjoy?

Many things. I enjoy working alongside business leaders to understand their pain points and working to problem solve and make progress. Although recruitment is a challenge in the recent climate, it is satisfying to identify and recruit talent and watch individuals come in and shape the business with their unique skill sets and attributes. Implementing software, policy and procedures to provide the additional business structure is excellent; as a new business, I can see an immediate impact, which gratifies me.

Who inspires you?

Personally, my Dad. Professionally, Steven Bartlett or Gary Vee.

Favorite film?

I don’t have one; I was always a books and music person. I like a good TV show, though – Breaking Bad is an all-time fave; I recently loved White Lotus S2 and Happy Valley.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A PE teacher.

First album you bought?

My first buy was two albums on cassette – Genesis and Betty Boo.

What are the company’s most significant challenges, and how do you think we are positioned to meet them?

Recruiting and retaining the right talent at the right time will always be challenging throughout the employee lifecycle. Establishing our ways of working and setting internal culture and expectations in a relatively new business is a necessary work in progress too. Even so, I am confident that we are building a great team with ambitious plans, and so far, we have turned every challenge into an opportunity. Having the flexibility to make decisions whilst being supported by business leaders supports us greatly.

Dry January

After the excesses (for some of us) of the winter holidays, our first blog post could be about none other than Dry January! If you fancy a detox, it can be a perfect time to re-evaluate your routine. January is when our culture pushes us to think about quitting habits that don’tdon’t support us.

But Dry January, particularly nowadays, isn’tisn’t about a simple detox. It has gained deeper meaning since the COVID-19 epidemic: The latest alcohol statistics from the UK in 2021 reported the highest number of deaths from alcohol-specific causes. In its latest report, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that 9641 deaths from alcohol-specific causes were registered in the UK, equating to almost 15 deaths for every 100,000. Stats and history show that alcohol abuse is used as a coping mechanism at times of uncertainty due to its effect on the brain’s neurochemical pathways. Alcohol releases feel-good endorphins, helping us get by temporarily. It’s a reason why alcohol is addictive.

Now fast-forward to now – How can Dry January benefit your health?

  • You’ll get a mood boost – Alcohol gives you a temporary mood boost by releasing the ”happy hormones” dopamine & serotonin. The body becomes used to the increase and starts making less to compensate. Dry January will allow your body to rebalance your hormones for a better mood.
  • You’ll sleep more soundly – While some believe alcohol can help you fall asleep faster, it prevents deep sleep. Giving up alcohol will help your body get the deep restorative sleep it needs to heal and balance the body.
  • You’ll feel less bloated or lose extra weight – Alcohol is an inflammatory substance often made worse by mixing with sugary and fizzy drinks, which contain high amounts of calories. Give dry January a go, and you will soon see a difference.
  • You’ll have a more robust immune system – Alcohol suppresses your body’s immune system. Give it up for dry January, and you’ll notice you’re less likely to catch every bug that comes your way. Even if you pick something up, you will get better faster.
  • You’ll have a new relationship with alcohol – Giving up alcohol for just one month can have long-term benefits and reset your relationship with alcohol. Research conducted by the university of Sussex found that six months after Dry January more than 70% of people continue drinking more healthily.

How to do Dry January

The most fun way of giving up alcohol for a month (apart from recruiting a friend to keep each other in check!) and keeping motivated is to do it whilst fundraising for alcoholchange.org.

By fundraising for your Dry January®, you will contribute significantly to Alcohol Change UK’sUK’s efforts to minimize the harm that alcohol causes in the UK. Twenty people in the UK die daily due to drinking, and alcohol’salcohol’s effects extend beyond individual lives to include families, communities, and our entire society.

So do your bit for charity and get sponsored whilst staying sober!

Let’s dive into the far-reaching benefits of our payroll services.

The Payrole Debate

What are some of the most prevalent barriers to keeping payroll in-house? Which types of businesses are most affected by these concerns?

Financial Strain and Resource Cost

Simply put, in-house payroll can significantly strain a business’s financial and staff resources. For SMEs in particular, these costs add up quickly: payroll software, training, printers, printing and distributing payslips, creating tax documents, etc.

This is not to mention time costs and training expenses. For the average business owner, in-house payroll requires 80 work hours per annum, the equivalent of two full weeks of work!

Errors and Penalties

Doing payroll in-house, particularly with an overrun or inadequately trained staff, increases the risk of human error. This can negatively impact a business’s reputation and retention rates.

Common payroll errors include miscalculating pay or overtime wages, not paying employees on time, classifying employees incorrectly, missing deadlines, and using the wrong tax rates. There are sizable penalties associated with getting payroll wrong!

Once your business starts to grow, payroll can quickly become costly and challenging.

This is where Eternal Engagements comes in. With our straightforward, comprehensive payroll processing solution, employers can rest assured that their payroll needs are being attended to expediently and professionally.
