Postal & Courier Activities

Postal & Courier Activities

The Postal and Courier Activities industry has undergone considerable structural change over the past decade, prompted by the continued liberalisation of the UK postal market. This has enabled other businesses to compete with the former state monopoly, Royal Mail. The activities for which the industry is responsible can be divided into two main categories: postal delivery and parcel delivery. Postal delivery includes all addressed mail, marketing mail, business mail and publications, such as newspapers and magazines. Parcel delivery encompasses the domestic and international delivery of parcels.

Over the five-year period from 2016 through 2021-22, industry revenue is expected to increase at a compound annual rate of 3.7%, driven in part by growing demand brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, particularly for medical couriers and retailers. Moreover, the growing shift to online shopping is expected to have a long-term effect on consumer behaviour.
